Aspendos
Aspendos ia an ancient Greek city that is located next to Köprücay River. Aspendos is situated on 45 km east of Antalya and built in 2nd century A.D. City is famous for its wonderful ancient amphitheatre. The theatre has a seting capacity of around 15,000 people and it is the best preserved ancient theatre in Anatolia. Theathre is even today used in national festivals. For instance, Aspendos opera and ballet festival is taking place in this theatre. An important speciality of Aspendos is, it was one of the few cities that coined money with its own name in history.
To reach Aspendos dolmus (small buses) can be taken from Antalya. Aspendos ancient city is very close to Serik Village. You can visit Aspendos during all weekdays between 8:00 and 19:00. Entrance costs 10 TL.
Next to amphitheatre, there is acropolis of Aspendos on a hill. Near acropolis you can find other ruins of other important buildings of Aspendos. These are basilica, monumental fountain (nymphaeum), agora and Roman aqueduct. Aqueduct is an array 15 meter-high arches and hollow stone blocks on top of arches. Aqueduct was used to bring water to city from water source in mountains at about 20 km distance. Ruins of gymnasium and baths are to the south of theatre.
